Smoking in the Workplace

Symmetrical Group aims to ensure the health and safety of its employees through effective systems and management practices. The company is committed to ensuring that each employee, contractor and visitor is fit for work and the health and safety of themselves or others is not compromised.

Through the promotion of a healthy lifestyle Symmetrical Group hope to minimise the risk of personal injury of contractors and visitors, by introducing the following measures

  1. No smoking during agreed working times on our clients sites.
  2. No smoking in company buildings, vehicles or machinery
  3. Provide information on health hazards associated with smoking tobacco-related products.

About 70% of Australians choose not to smoke, however, they often cannot avoid "passively" smoking other people's cigarettes. It has been estimated that over 20 years, working in a smoky room is almost 500 times more likely to cause lung cancer in a non-smoker than working in a building containing asbestos.

Smoking irritates the eyes, nose and throat. It can trigger asthma attacks and is a danger to people with pre-existing heart conditions.

Smoking is the largest preventable cause of death and disease in Australia. Each year, almost 20,000 Australians die from smoking related illnesses.

Smoking at work has been legally and medically defined as an Occupational Health Hazard both to the smoker and other workers. Smoking is increasingly being recognised by employers as a major threat to the safety and health of employees.

This policy has been reviewed and endorsed by the directors of Symmetrical Group who foresee benefits in, and take responsibility for, its successful implementation. By accepting employment with Symmetrical Group, each employee acknowledges that he/she is responsible for the application of this policy.
